Profile

I joined AIU in 2012, where I teach Academic Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Academic Reading in the EAP and BE programmes. More recently, I've been working on a textbook called Introducing the Liberal Arts, which is now used in the EAP3 Academic Reading course that all EAP students take.

Before coming to AIU, I taught in a range of international contexts. I spent five years teaching EAP and ESAP at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, and during that time I also worked as an IELTS examiner for the British Council in cities like Shanghai and Beijing.

Earlier in my career, I taught ESP courses in the UK for professional groups such as police officers, military personnel, and healthcare staff, and I also worked in Tokyo as a corporate English trainer.

Research Field

My research focuses on English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English-medium instruction (EMI), and student agency in higher education, particularly among Confucian Heritage Culture (CHC) learners studying in English-medium environments. My doctoral research examined how CHC students can develop transformative agency when they are invited not simply to follow a curriculum but to participate in redesigning it.

My earlier research also explored how educational environments shape student learning practices. This includes a CHAT-based analysis of residential learning communities at a liberal arts university in Japan and research on transmedia education in a British university in China, examining how multimodal projects can support critical engagement and scholarly habitus among international students.

Message to Students

Please call me Jamie (my given name). You are very welcome to visit my office (A2-7) during my office hours: Mon - Thu 11:00 am to 11:45 am, and appointments are not necessary.
