Proposal:

The proposal is to teach a short course in Creative Writing in English to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students at Presidency University in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in May, 2014. The purpose is to test the curricula and pedagogical development of a short course in Creative Writing in English to be taught, ultimately, at Akita International University. The short course will have ten class sessions of 3 hours each over the course of two weeks and will be taught to a target audience of between 10 and 15 intermediate university EFL students.

The researcher/instructor has conducted extensive research into the use of Creative Writing in the English as a Foreign Language classroom. The development of a short course in Creative Writing will provide students at Akita International University an opportunity to utilize English as a medium for self-expression. Creative writing is a valuable instructional tool in the EFL classroom. Although creative writing is often considered the purview of the native speaker the research speaks to the many positive benefits of the craft within the context of second language learners (Dougherty, 2007a; Dougherty, 2007b; Dougherty & Dougherty, 2008; Dougherty, 2010; Dougherty, 2011).
