Profile

After fifteen years as a small business owner, I moved to Austria where I studied sociology at the University of Vienna, initiating a new life as a scholar. During my graduate studies at the University of Colorado I worked as a research assistant, studio associate and teaching assistant in numerous contexts for a variety of professors. Prior to my current appointment, I was employed by the University of Colorado Denver as a geography instructor at its extension campus in Beijing, China (International College Beijing). The years I spent living and working in Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean infuse pragmatic and cross-cultural perspectives into my scholarship. In the lecture hall I draw on my restaurant background and world travels to engage students by exploring related geographies such as Jazz, salt, and peanuts. Examples like these pique students' interest in geographical thought and help them think critically about spatial outcomes of `common sense' business practices.

Research Field

My physical foci are public spaces. My human foci are marginalized and ostracized groups. Social justice and environmental justice are my passions. As such, I am interested in the following: the gentrification of public space, public space's role in gentrification, neoliberal regulation of public spaces, splintering urbanism, the moral economies of the homeless, the legal geographies of alterity, informal development patterns, and the geographies of street vending and illicit drug use. Trained as a planner, a historical geographer, and as an anthropologist, I am comfortable conducting research in city hall, at town-hall meetings, by delving into official and unofficial archives, and, importantly, by ethnographically engaging with the everyday field of urban practice.

Recent Activities

In collaboration with the eminent anthropologist Stephen Koester, my current research focuses on the homeless in Denver, Colorado and their struggles to survive in a city that recently outlawed camping. Denver defines camping as sleeping in public with any sort of protection against the elements, including obvious protections such as tents, tarps, and cardboard shelters as well as less visible, but nonetheless crucial, survival items like bedrolls, sleeping bags, and blankets. Denver's camping ban did not “make homelessness go away" as policy makers and lobbyists seemed to have wished; however, it has dramatically increased the personal and social misery of Denver's poor. Aside from its central thrust of social activism, this project is revealing fascinating micro-politics of power, exploitation, cooptation, and subversion in a city that has completely embraced a neoliberal model of urban governance.
